Acne is a condition which develops in and around the hair follicles and their oil producing glands (called the sebaceous glands). Although we have these glands all over the surface of our body, it is only on the face, chest and back that acne develops. The oil produced by sebaceous glands is called sebum and it begins to appear soon after puberty due to hormonal changes.
Acne may be inflammatory or non-inflammatory. The primary non-inflammatory lesion is called “comedone”. Whiteheads are pale, slightly elevated papules categorized as closed comedones. Blackheads are plugs of material that accumulate in the sebaceous glands and are categorized as open comedones. Comedonal acne can become inflamed and lead to the formation of painful papules, pustules and nodules. Acne usually starts during teenage years but may also begin in the twenties or thirties.
There are a number of approaches to treating acne and the scarring it leaves behind. Your dermatologist can prescribe the appropriate skincare to treat your acne, as well as topical and/or oral medication.
There are also procedures like Microdermabrasion, Hydrafacial, Acne Booster Peels, Theraclear and Broad Band Light (BBL) to help treat the condition.
Theraclear Acne Therapy is an FDA approved technology that combines advance vacuum (suction) and filtered broadband light to treat multiple causes of acne (p. acne bacteria and hyperactive sebaceous glands and blocked pores) in one treatment for most cases. It provides almost instant results in reducing acne bacteria, hyperactive sebaceous glands and blocked pores. Please note that this procedure should only be performed by an accredited medical professional. The vacuum is used to clear the pores of sebaceous material that may be clogging it thus cleansing the pores of the cause of many acne conditions. The suction action pulls the skin physically closer to the source of the broadband light which activates porphyrins to destroy p.acne bacteria and reduce sebum production.
Theraclear treatment is suitable for patients who want a faster response, antibiotic resistant patients or patients who have antibiotic concerns, patients who do not respond to other treatments, and women with hormonally induced acne who choose to avoid the systemic treatments.
HydraFacial is a hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with little to no discomfort or downtime. This medical treatment is soothing, moisturizing, non-invasive and non-irritating, so it is suitable even for most sensitive skin types. Get evaluated by an accredited doctor to determine if you are a good candidate for it. The HydraFacial treatment improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, and hyperpigmentation. This is also gentle enough to be used on the lips, to slough off dead skin cells, and smoothen the lip contour.
MDA removes blackheads and whiteheads effectively by gently exfoliating the superficial layer of the skin. This procedure enables the dead cells to be abraded and then whisked away by vacuum suction. New skin growth is subsequently stimulated, leaving your skin smoother, brighter, firmer and with a course of treatments, blemish free. It is used primarily for people with comedonal and papular acne, as well as an adjunct to people undergoing skin rejuvenating procedures.
It is a treatment whereby high potency Vitamin C is applied to the skin using electrical charges to enhance delivery into the skin cells. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which helps to repair and regenerate the skin, at the same time lightening pigmentation, dark eye circles and acne blemishes. After the treatment, a hyaluronate mask is applied to skin, enhancing the radiance and glow.

There is no miracle cure for acne. This is a medical fact, and a difficult thing for most patients to hear. Outbreaks may occur at any age from puberty to menopause, due to hormonal changes, stress, and sometimes with no apparent trigger. Patients may not necessarily outgrow their acne, and even if you have had perfect skin in your teenage years, you can still develop acne later on in life.
Commercials for acne products will never tell you that genetics play a large role. But the good news is that acne can be managed. Every individual has a unique skin chemistry, so proper control of acne requires assistance from a dermatologist to prescribe the appropriate treatment.
The evidence-based treatments that I use in my office have made me aware of the stark contrast between what people are being sold, and what actually works to alleviate certain skin problems. My goal is to provide safe and effective treatments, and I have been greatly encouraged by my patients’ clinical outcomes.
